The Caswell Farmers Market began in 2013 with a group of community members realizing the need and wanting to purchase local food and produce from Caswell County and surrounding farmers. Leslie Zimmerman, Tammy Carter, Stokes Regan and later Rebecca Page, began the endeavor and by 2015 had secured 501c (3) nonprofit status thus forming the Caswell County Local Food Council (CCLFC). The first market was on Saturdays in Semora, NC and a second market followed in Yanceyville. Eventually the two merged into one market on Thursdays in Yanceyville.
The market moved to the downtown Yanceyville Pavilion location in 2023 where it has become a central attraction in the county during the summer growing season. Since the tobacco farms have dwindled away and more small farmers have taken up expansion into produce, protein and other offerings, having a place for the farmers to sell their goods is a critical part of preserving the agriculture heritage in Caswell County.
A grant awarded to the Town of Yanceyville and CCLFC from the NC Tobacco Trust Commission will be used to build a shelter facility for the market providing both farmers and shoppers a more comfortable and safe experience during the summer heat and often late day thunderstorms. The project will also include public restrooms and a cold storage facility. This cold storage unit will aid market farmers as well as other Caswell growers in storing perishable items before transporting to the Center for Education & Agriculture Development (CEAD) hub/distribution center that is being built by Piedmont Community College in Pelham, NC. The farmers market facility is scheduled to begin in late 2025.
